News from the IBBY Executive Committee meeting
The EC met in Shah Alam just outside Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia in September.
Despite the exotic location and myriad distractions the members of the EC worked
hard during two long days of discussions.
The IBBY Yamada workshop
programme 2010: projects submitted by the IBBY sections of Indonesia,
Mexico, Nepal, Peru and Zambia were accepted. IBBY France will run a
three-week training course for a librarian from Burkina Faso under the
IBBY-Yamada Scholarship scheme. Watch the IBBY website for reports and
updates of all the projects.
The IBBY Children in Crisis
projects are progressing. A new project was accepted from IBBY Indonesia
to bring some relief to the children of Padang in Sumatra after the devastating
earthquake in August, further funding is by the IBBY Yamada Fund. The
workshop in Turkey to discuss the reading culture in Afghanistan was discussed
and you can read the report on the IBBY website under the
Children in Crisis Programme.
Donations to the IBBY programme were announced from Deborah Ellis, Rukhsana
Khan, Merle Harris, Christina Minaki and Katherine Paterson. We gratefully
acknowledge their generous support.
Fundraising for the IBBY projects is crucial and without a renewed fundraising
campaign many of our workshops will not be able to take place. If you

The Hans Christian Andersen 2010
Award Jury will meet in Basel on 13 and 14 March 2010. The sort list
will be immediately released and the winners will be announced at the IBBY Press
Conference at the Bologna Book Fair on Monday, 23 March 2010.

Bologna Book Fair 2010: Four Days Long
The 2010 Bologna Children's Book Fair has been extended by one day to bring it
back to its usual 4-day event: 23-26 March 2010. The IBBY press conference
will take place on Tuesday, 23 March at 14:30 in the Sala Concerto. The
winners of the 2010 Hans Christian Andersen Awards and the 2010 IBBY-Asahi
Reading Promotion Awards will be announced.

IBBY Turkey's Best Books of the Year Awards
Since 2004 the Turkish section of IBBY has chosen the best books of the year to
encourage writers, illustrators and publishers for children. In celebration of
the 15th anniversary of Turkish IBBY a special category was introduced: The Best
Children's Poetry Book of the Last Fifteen Years. The awards were
presented to the winners at the Istanbul Book Fair n 8 November 2009.

Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis 2009 – German Youth Literature Award 2009
Given annually by the German Section of IBBY with support from the
Bundesministerium für Familie, Senioren, Frauen
und Jugend
The 2009 awards were announced during the Frankfurt Book Fair on Thursday, 16
October. This year's special award for her complete works went to
illustrator Jutta Bauer. The full list of winners can be found on the

3rd Tallinn Illustration Triennial: The Power of Pictures

Alida Cutts Lifetime Membership Awards
Two recipients of the Alida Cutts Lifetime Membership Award were honoured at the
recent 8th IBBY Regional Conference in St Charles, Illinois. Anne
Pellowski and Katherine Paterson were honoured for their long commitment to
children's literature.

The First Student Conference to Commemorate Mowlana in
India

On the occasion of the year 2007 which is entitled the year of Mowlana
and for the sake of honoring the culture and glories of
Iran, the literary club of Islamic association of Iranian
students has held the first student conference to commemorate Mowlana in India.
The conference has commenced by reading the
message of Islamic republic
of Iran’s embassy on the
occasion of holding this conference. The attendance comprised students and
families residing in Mysore and
Bangalore, some guests from Tajikistan,
Afghanistan and India,
and also the cultural and science counselors of Islamic Republic of Iran.
There were a variety of
programs which comprised: The first Iranian children show entitled “the Elephant
in the darkness”, the play of “Moses and the shepherd” which followed by
“sama”(a sort of Mystical dance) , reciting some Lyrics form Masnavi, reading
some essays on Mowlana’s life and thoughts, reading poems,distributing CDs of
“Molavi Nameh” , singing songs, music, and delivering lectures.
The above mentioned conference was held on
6 December in Mysore, located on south of
India. All the activities were done by the
students.

International Children's Book Day 2006: 2 April
Niloofar Mahdian, of Children`s Book Council, has been granted the
fellowship of the International Youth Library at Munich which is given to up to
12 applicants each year from all over the world. She is going to study "the
feminist approach to children`s literature" during her 3 months stay at the
library from August to October 2007.
Creativity at The Tehran Correctional
Institute,
An exhibition of paintings by boys at Tehran Correctional Institute is held from
10 to 14 December (19 to 23 Azar) at Mirmiran Hall of The Iranian Artists Forum.
The exhibition is the result of group work supervised by two illustrators Ali
Bouzari and Faranak Salehi, since a year ago. There are more than 60 paintings
created in a variety of techniques and styles, for sale at the exhibition. The
exhibition is supported by Children`s Book Council of Iran (Shoraye Ketabe
Koodak), The Correctional Institute, Nazar Cultural and Publishing Institute,
Illustrators of Children`s Books Association, and Digaran Design Office. The
inaugural ceremony is from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Beethoven Hall of The Iranian
Artists Forum.

Members of
CBC, family and friends gathered at the Iranian Artists Forum on October 10 2006
to commemorate the loss of a dear friend. Mansoureh Raii
will be remmembered for her many contributions to children's literature in Iran
and to its introduction outside the country, as a teacher, researcher, EC
member, Hans Christian Andersen jury member, founding member of the Encyclopedia
for Young People, and BookBird editor and Secretary of Pooya Educational
Research Association. Besides talks by colleagues and family members, photos and
films brought back warm memories.

The first
International Congress on Childhood Cancer (ICCC-2006) will be held at MAHAK
(The Society to Support Children Suffering from Cancer) ,from 29 to 31 October
2006 (7-9 Aban 1385).
It is very important that for the first time in Iran an NGO dealing with books
and children that is Children`s Book Council (Shoraye Ketabe Koodak) has been
invited to contribute talks and hold an exhibition about the importance of books
for children in hospital environment. Ms. Maryam Ahmadi and Mr. Masood Naseri
will speak on 29 Oct (7 Aban), and proper books for sick children are shown to
the audience by CBC`s Committee of Books for Sick Children during the event. All
those interested are cordially invited to participate in the session. The
conference will be held at 2-5 pm. in MAHAK Childhood Cancer Hospital in Oshon
Blvd. , Darabad, Tehran , Iran.
Members of
Children`s Book Council (CBC), guests and press, gathered in its library to
listen to the reports of Mrs. Ghaeni, Hans Christian Andersen Jury president
2006-2008, and Ms. Taraneh Matloob, who were present at the 30th IBBY
Congress in Macau, 20-24 September 2006). In this session which was held on 18
Oct. 2006 (26 Mehr 1385) , Mrs. Ghaeni talked about her participation in the
IBBY sessions, as well as her new plans and responsibilities as jury president.
Ms. Taraneh Matloob talked about her paper entitled "The Use of Multimedia to
Present and Preserve Lullabies in Iran " which was presented at the Congress, as
well as her memories of the interesting scenes she had come across during the
Congress. It should be noted that Professors Parirokh and Fattahi, of the
Department of Library and Information Science of Ferdosi University of Mashhad
also presented their articles at the Congress, and the Center for Cultural
Development of Children (CCDC) had been nominated for the IBBY-ASAHI Reading
Promotion Award. Also in the session, Mr. Mohammadi, CBC's nominnee for the Hans
Christian Anderson Award for 2006 was presented with a diploma; IBBy Honor List
Diplomas were presented to Ms. Vakili, the late Ms. Vaezi, Mr. Akbarpour, and
Mr. Shafii and their publishers, namely Ofogh, Golban and Shabaviz.
- Ms. Mansoureh Raii passed away
IBBY Iran announces with great regret the passing away of Ms. Mansoureh Raii, after years of fight against cancer on 25 July 2006. Distinguished educator and specialist in children's literature, Mansoureh served on the Children's Book Council EC from 1979 to 2006 and played a major role in its growth. Fervent supporter of IBBY's aims and objectives, she acted as BookBird editor for long years and served as a Hans Christian Andersen Jury member in 1998 and 2000.

Libraries for Cultural Development have been nominated by IBBY section, Iran
to receive Asahi Reading promotion Award 2006
Since 2000 the project Libraries for Cultural Development has paid special attention to cultural activities and education for girls. The project is organized by the Center for the Cultural Development of Children (CCDC) in Tehran and aims at creating self-esteem amongst the young people of the villages. One of the aims of the project is to promote cultural literacy through quality books and cultural activities for children and young people aged 6 to 18 in deprived rural areas of Iran. The libraries are established as centers for reading , story telling, creative drama and author programs that allow the young people to meet their favorite authors.

Parnaz Nayeri 2006 HCAA Jury member, like her four Iranian predecessors organized an exhibition of the HCA candidates for illustration at the CBC Research Library, February 24-26 2006. Arranged by country all books had Persian summary translations. The Exhibition attracted more 150 visitors, mainly young graphic and art students.Well known illustrators such a F. Mesghali, N. Zarrinkelk, M.R. Dadgar and B. Gharibpour also came to see the works. The four last hours were devoted to discussion and comments. Parnaz found this part to be very interesting.
The main aim of the exhibition is to create prior awareness, for more fruitful discussions after the announcement of the award, and better use of the collection which is donated to the Research Library.

2005 Exhibition of Outstanding Books for Young People with Disabilities has continued to tour Tehran at Modern Mother's Attitude Institute families participated in lively discussions; at Hosseiniyeh Ershad Public Libray, serving disabled young people was the focal point: and at the Iranian Artists Forum contents were relieved in several workshops. The collection will travel to Isfahan on March 6 and 7 2006 with four CBC colleagues, the two day Seminar is hosted by The Association of Friends of Children's Literature.
